5 Signs It's Time to Realign Your Dentures

According to the American College of Prosthodontists, denture wearers should realign or replace their dentures at least every 5-10 years or sooner if they encounter any problems.
Expert dentist Danny Jeon, DMD, keeps your smile healthy and bright at his office in Tucker, GA. He fits you for dentures or realigns your current ones with minimal hassle and maximum care.
5 reasons for realignment
Although we fashion dentures out of strong materials, such as porcelain or acrylic resin, they may still lose some functionality over time. Indications your dentures aren’t working as well as they should include:
1. Cracks
Dentures go through plenty of wear-and-tear. Dr. Jeon recommends removing dentures at night to help preserve them. If you notice any fractures, consider realignment.
2. Warping
Improper cleaning may cause your dentures to warp. It may sound counterintuitive, but you shouldn’t clean them with hot water. Instead, soak them overnight in tepid water with a non-abrasive cleanser to keep them in top shape.
3. Fungal infection
Denture-related stomatitis — a fungal infection due to candida — occurs in up to 70% of denture wearers. It may trigger gum pain, along with:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Sores at the corner of your lips
- White patches inside your mouth
Dr. Jeon offers antifungal medication or special dental procedures to solve the problem. He also suggests certain lifestyle adjustments, such as reducing sugar, not smoking, and brushing up on your dental hygiene.
A realignment also helps reduce chronic inflammation due to ill-fitting dentures.
4. Trouble chewing
It’s normal to have some difficulty eating when you first wear dentures. If minor slippage occurs, gently bite down to reposition them. It’s also best to avoid overly acidic foods that might irritate your gums. Fortunately, you can soon enjoy most of your favorite dishes.
We also recommend sticking to non-sticky foods at first, such as:
- Soup
- Yogurt
- Scrambled eggs
- Pasta
If you continue to experience chewing problems, discuss the situation with Dr. Jeon. He might opt to realign their fit.
5. Prolonged pain or discomfort
You may notice sore areas on your gums or develop pain while chewing or speaking. Dr. Jeon helps reduce any muscle strain on your jaw and relieve pain by realigning your dentures.
What occurs during realignment
We offer three levels of realignment depending upon your particular needs, including:
- A soft realign to fill any gaps between your dentures and gums with a flexible, silicone-based material
- A hard realign encompassing your dentures’ entire inner surface. The lab adjusts your dentures using the same acrylic material that created your prosthetic teeth to maintain consistency.
- A temporary realigning to improve your fit while you wait for a more permanent adjustment.
We generally use soft realignments in people with more sensitive or receding gums, which usually takes only one visit. Hard realigning provides a more durable solution requiring multiple visits.
